Four suits

The four minor arcana suits (swords, chalices, pentacles and wands) symbolise the classical Greek natural elements – air, water, earth and fire, which in turn have further symbolic meaning – intellect, emotion, possessions and challenges.

Swords: often referred to as epees, this suit is linked with the element of air, which traditionally symbolises mental and intellectual concerns as well as progress.

Chalices: the name of this suit varies a great deal from deck to deck. Other names include coupes, cups or goblets. Chalices are filled with the natural element of water, the symbol of love, emotion and creativity.

Pentacles: material possessions and wealth are indicated by this suit. It is concerned with all things to do with business, finance, careers and professional status. In some decks, pentacles are known as coins, discs or deniers.

Wands:  wands, also known as batons, sceptres or rods, are the suit of energy, optimism and determination. They symbolise positivity and progress.
